St Michael’s Players

The players have been in existence for nearly 35 years and well over 100 people have trodden the boards in our productions and even more have supported us backstage in a whole variety of jobs.

Our productions have included the very moving ‘Murder in the Cathedral’, ‘The Roses of Eyam’ and 'What men Live By’ but we are best known for our comedies, which have ranged from self-penned revues and whodunits to ‘Shirley Valentine’, ‘’Allo ‘Allo’, ‘Habeus Corpus’ and Da Virgin code, the latter being an excuse to portray Melbourne, its personalities and businesses in Elizabethan times; historical accuracy was not a primary concern.

In our very recent productions we have continued to put our audiences through the emotional ringer while giving them some great nights out: our own take on Oh What A Lovely War in 2014 generated both tears and laughter, whilst in 2015 our production of Fawlty Towers, alongside an updated Victoria Wood sketch about dating and our satirical version of Les Miserables poking fun at recent housing developments gave us full houses on all three nights for the first time in our history.

Nearly all our profits go to charity.

We are a pretty anarchic bunch, who are more interested in the camaraderie of the group and what we do on stage rather than formal meetings and minute taking. We are always looking for new members: script writers; directors; actors; lighting and sound techies; costume makers and scene builders; prompts etc.

If you would like to join or just find out more about us, please give Gordon Hughes (01332 863064) or Tom Mills (01332 863535) a call).

Here are some pictures from our recent productions.
